Bird Watching

There are rich and varied eco-systems locally for bird and marine life. Professional and amateur photographers are regular visitors to Kilmore Cottage, especially during the nesting season in May. Bird watching locations include Tacumshane Lake, Saltee Islands, Our Lady’s Island Lake and the north slob. On the Saltee Islands you will find gannets, gulls, colourful puffins, manx shearwaters, razorbills and cormorants. Tacumshane Lake hosts Bewick’s swans, Brent geese, wigeon, oystercatchers, golden plover and lapwing. Lady’s Island Lake is crucial to the survival of the snow-white Roseate Terns. The Wexford Wildfowl reserve is open to the public,  and is jointly owned and managed by BirdWatch Ireland and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. 250 bird species have been recorded on the Reserve, with the Greenland White-fronted Goose being the most numerous and important of these.
