Kilmore Cottage Holidays for the Disabled

We are delighted to be able to accommodate and welcome guests who have a disability or mobility issues, including wheelchair users and the older generation.
Kilmore Cottage is proud to have been awarded the ABLE Tourism Award which is the Q mark for accessibility in a tourism business, and reflects our commitment to the provision of holidays for those with disability. We have been providing holidays for the disabled since 2000 and are pleased to assist guests with our practical experience of disabled friendly holidays in Ireland. You can read our accessibility statement here or alternatively you can download our accessibility statement.

Kilmore Cottage Disabled Friendly Features

All three cottages can provide an accessible holiday for you and your family or group. You can download a summary of the accommodation provided in each cottage, which highlights accessible bedrooms and bathrooms. There are a number of features in the cottages which facilitate your accessible holiday experience:

  • Level concrete set down area at front door
There are no ramps or steps in any of the cottages as the outside grounds for all cottages have been raised to enable level access.
  • Ground floor bedrooms
Kilmore Cottage has a ground floor bedroom with an adjoining accessible bathroom. Both Teach Eile and Teach a Trí are single storey cottages and both bedrooms in each cottage are therefore all on ground floor level.
  • Beds
All beds are wooden framed and so a hoist can be slid under. Most of the beds are 21 inches / 52 cm high from floor to mattress. The double beds are 23.5 inches / 60 cm from floor to mattress. We can provide wooden blocks to raise the beds by 3 inches / 7.5 cm.
  • Accessible bathrooms
Each cottage has one large ground floor accessible bathroom. Each accessible bathroom has a wheel-in, wet room style shower with grab rails, and we provide shower chairs for upon request. Grab rails are situated adjacent to toilets and hand basins, and we provide toilet seat raisers upon request. The bathrooms are spacious and there is ample turning space for a wheelchair. All taps are lever taps.
  • Turning space
All the main rooms in our cottages are spacious, so there is ample turning space in the kitchen, living, bedrooms and accessibility bathrooms. The floors are all hard surfaces and finished with tiles, wood or laminate.
  • Wide doorways
Both Teach Eile and Teach a Trí have wide doorways and are suitable for power chairs. Kilmore Cottage has standard width doorways.
  • Kitchens
All kitchen surfaces are normal height. Kitchen tables can be used as food preparation areas and all taps are lever taps. In Teach Eile the sink can be turned into a wheel under unit by removing the unit beneath the sink, and we are pleased to do this upon request.
  • Equipment
We are pleased to provide complimentary shower chairs and toilet seat raisers upon request.
  • Specialist Equipment
We can provide our guests with details of companies from whom they can hire specialist accessible equipment such as hoists or wheelchairs and we are pleased to assist with delivery arrangements.
  • Low level light switches and sockets
All light switches are low level and there are low level sockets in the main rooms.
  • Irish Wheelchair toilet master key
We can provide this key upon request, which provides access for guests to accessible public toilets. This key is similar to the “Radar” key which is used in the UK.
  • Accessible beaches, restaurants and attractions
We are pleased to help guests to choose accessible restaurants, accessible activities, and accessible tourist attractions. Mary Barry’s pub, very close by in Kilmore village, does pub food and is wheelchair accessible, and it has an accessible toilet. Other pubs are less accessible, but some of our wheelchair user guests frequent them in any case! Wheelchair users can hire a beach wheelchair free of charge in Kilmore Quay, and on several other Wexford beaches, thanks to a fantastic initiative by Wexford County Council.
  • Accessible Farm
We offer all guests a tour of our organic working farm. However, trekking through fields is not the most accessible of activities, so we can bring the animals into a paddock or yard so that you can easily see our cows, donkeys and hens, (and the bull too if he co-operates!)
  • Customer Service
We can’t promise that our cottages will suit everybody, but we are pleased to discuss your individual needs with you. Please Contact Us and we will be pleased to talk to you personally on the phone or you can email us with your queries.

Who do we suit?

The best person to decide if our cottages will suit you is – you. We understand that it can be difficult to make a holiday choice, particularly if one or more guests have a disability, and so we are happy to discuss your individual requirements with you.

Jackie and Jim’s Wedding

We were delighted when regular guests Jim & Jackie from Staffordshire, England, picked Kilmore Cottages as their honeymoon destination, pictured right on their wedding day. We are glad to report that Kilmore Cottage doesn’t impart anything like “the curse of Hello magazine” as, some four years later, Jim and Jackie are still happily married!

Guests: Jim and Jackie

Our guests have very different types and levels of disability

  • Holidays for service users in care homes for the disabled – care homes regularly book one or more houses to bring their services users and carers away for a holiday
  • Family holidays for the disabled – families where either an adult or a child has a disability
  •  Holidays for disabled couples – couples where one partner has a disability
  • Holidays for wheelchair users – where one or more guests is a wheelchair user
  • Holidays for the deaf – those who are deaf or are hearing impaired
  •  Holidays for the blind – those who are blind or are visually impaired

Kilmore Cottage is pleased to be able to provide holidays for the disabled. We welcome guests with any kind of disability, be that a physical disability or an intellectual disability. As we can’t promise that our cottages will suit everybody, we are always pleased to discuss your individual holiday requirements with you. Please feel free to Contact Us for more information.
