Walking

Ballyteigue Burrow is close by in Kilmore Quay and is up to 16km return (or much less if you prefer!), through the finest sand dune walls in the South East of Ireland. Children love the hills, while the more level grassy pathways on sandy soil forge an easier path through the dunes and it’s easy on your joints. There are a number of rare wild plants to be found on the Burrow and at its simplest it’s just a lovely place to walk, with a real feeling of the wilderness.

Johnstown Castle is ideal if you want a short walk of an hour or less in picturesque surroundings and it’s only 15 minutes’ drive from Kilmore Cottage. There are Tarmacadem pathways which are great for walking with a buggy or if you are a wheelchair user.  The Peacock tea room is a nice way to round off your walk and you can check opening times online, as they vary seasonally.

Tintern Abbey is surrounded by a series of trails which are well maintained and the three looped walks cater for varying fitness levels. There is a stream running through it and the trails meander through woods in a very pleasing way. It’s a lovely day out and you can either bring a picnic or visit the tea rooms there.
